This image is a composite of surface scans made by the artist while documenting work in the famed restoration studio, Opificio Pietra Dure in Florence, Italy. These scans are of gamma radiographs of the unrivalled “Gates of Paradise”, attached to the doors of the Duomo Baptistry, created between 1425 and 1452 by Lorenzo Ghiberti. The panels represent Cain killing Abel and the battle between David and Goliath. The studio has been working continuously since 1588 and has restored pieces ranging from Giotto’s Vatican fragments and Fra Angelico altar pieces to Jackson Pollock paintings, as well as repairing extraordinary furniture and decorative objects.
